Service and volunteer opportunities are powerful tools for students to build relationships, strengthen skills, and connect classroom learning to real-world impact.
Opportunities range from one-time activities to semester-long commitments with local nonprofits, as well as immersive options like service-learning courses, alternative breaks, volunteer internships, and service-based student organizations. We also offer engagement advising sessions to help students navigate and connect with opportunities.
We're here to help you find something that fits your interests, goals, and schedule. Book an appointment today or explore opportunities on your own, at the Volunteer Portal.

About advising appointments
A volunteer advising appointment is a short conversation where you can sort out what kind of service work feels right for you. You’ll talk through what you’re interested in, how much time you have, and the types of experiences you want—whether that’s something quick and low-commitment or something longer and more involved.
From there, the advisor will walk you through a range of options. That may include campus-based projects, partnerships with local nonprofits, one-time events, or courses and programs that incorporate service. You’ll also get help navigating the volunteer portal and figuring out where to start.
By the end of the meeting, you should have a clear idea of your next steps and any resources you might need. If things change later or you want to explore new possibilities, you’re welcome to come back for another appointment.
Hawkeye Service Breaks 2024
Hawkeye Service Breaks help students build meaningful relationships, gain perspective, and develop leadership skills they can carry back to campus and beyond. They also give students the chance to learn firsthand about community needs and contribute to projects that make a real impact.
