We also offer engagement advising sessions to help students navigate and connect with opportunities.

UI Volunteer Portal
The University of Iowa Volunteer Portal, developed in partnership with United Way of Johnson and Washington Counties, is a central space to explore volunteer opportunities and connect with organizations making a difference in our community.
Volunteer advising
To get started, we encourage you to begin by setting up an advising appointment. Volunteer advising appointments consist of a one-on-one meeting in-person or through Zoom with one of our staff.
Hawkeye Service Breaks
All students who wish to join a Hawkeye Service Breaks team must enroll in the corresponding 3 s.h. service-learning course (LS:1024) for the Spring semester. This is a 10-week course that will meet twice per week throughout the semester.
About advising appointments
A volunteer advising appointment is a short conversation where you can sort out what kind of service work feels right for you. You’ll talk through what you’re interested in, how much time you have, and the types of experiences you want—whether that’s something quick and low-commitment or something longer and more involved.
From there, the advisor will walk you through a range of options. That may include campus-based projects, partnerships with local nonprofits, one-time events, or courses and programs that incorporate service. You’ll also get help navigating the volunteer portal and figuring out where to start.
By the end of the meeting, you should have a clear idea of your next steps and any resources you might need. If things change later or you want to explore new possibilities, you’re welcome to come back for another appointment.
Hawkeye Service Breaks 2024
Hawkeye Service Breaks help students build meaningful relationships, gain perspective, and develop leadership skills they can carry back to campus and beyond. They also give students the chance to learn firsthand about community needs and contribute to projects that make a real impact.
