Students participating in the Hawkeye Service Breaks will enroll in this academic course.

This course is an introduction to theoretical approaches to service learning and shared experiential learning. The class includes concepts of intersectionality of varied social and community issues, reflection and reciprocity, active citizenship and community building, practical implementation of skills from student's academic disciplines, and leadership development. This is a 10-week course that meets in person twice per week (Mondays: 6:00PM – 6:15PM; Wednesdays 5:00PM – 5:50PM). Students will participate in the trip service immersion experience from March 9-17, 2024 (spring break) in their designated team location as part of the course requirements. On the trip, students will complete approximately 24 total hours of direct service with nonprofit partners related to the team’s topic and participate in critical reflection each evening.

This is a 3-semester course that occurs every Spring Semester (LS:1024).
