Are you ready to explore what it means to be part of the Hawkeye family and help make Johnson County feel like home? Service is a powerful way to clarify your values, strengthen your skills, and connect classroom learning to real-world impact.

Opportunities range from one-time activities to semester-long commitments with local nonprofits, as well as immersive options like service-learning courses, alternative breaks, volunteer internships, and service-based student organizations. You can also meet with engagement advising to find opportunities that align with your goals.

Wherever you are in your journey, there’s a service experience that fits your interests and schedule. Explore current opportunities on the Volunteer Portal at uiowa.galaxydigital.com.

Volunteer Portal

The Volunteer Portal, developed in partnership with United Way of Johnson and Washington Counties, is a central space to explore volunteer opportunities and connect with organizations making a difference in our community.

Volunteer Advising

To get started, we encourage you to begin by setting up an advising appointment. Volunteer advising appointments consist of a one-on-one meeting in-person in The Community Space or virtual through Zoom with our Volunteer Coordinator.

Hawkeye Service Breaks

All students who wish to join a Hawkeye Service Breaks team must enroll in the corresponding 3 s.h. service-learning course (LS:1024) for the Spring semester. This is a 10-week course that will meet twice per week throughout the semester.

Volunteer Advising

To get started, we encourage you to begin by setting up an advising appointment. Volunteer advising appointments consist of a one-on-one meeting in-person in The Community Space or virtual through Zoom with our Volunteer Coordinator. During this session, students will be able to express special interests in service opportunities, discuss the means of service, and get connected with community partners and non-profit organizations. In discussing local service opportunities, we would like to take into account your schedule, interests, and any other factors to ensure you enjoy and feel supported through your experience as an avid servant leader.
